Joe K broke open his race season in the windy & tough Cat 3 race in Plainville this past weekend. There was a good sized field of 40 guys.
"The race started off fast from the start with the pack staying together for the first 5-6 laps. I was near the front when I saw the first break of the day go off so I hit the gas and tagged along. A group of about 7 got clear and after about 2 or 3 laps we had a solid 20sec gap. The pace was hard and fast especially into the wind. I got caught behind some wheels that could not keep the pace, I had to come around and close a gap into the wind. A few laps later it happened again and I was caught in no mans land with two others. we tried to bridge up but to no avail, I was spent! I settled into the pack for a few laps and then a nasty 2 man crash on the back side, gust of wind, touch of wheels, and the screeching sound of plastic and pavement. The pack slowed down and the 5 man break eventually caught the field. We were pulled with 3 laps to go. I made a slight dig in the end to finish 14th."
